EYFS

Welcome to Early Years

What is the Early Years Foundation Stage?

The Foundation Stage begins in Nursery and continues through to Reception. We help the children to learn through playing, exploring and being active. This means children will take part in a range of fun, practical activities; some of which are adult led, some guided by adults and some will be child-initiated.

We follow the EYFS Framework and Reforms and through our creative curriculum, based on skills and knowledge, your child will receive the best possible early year’s education.

7 Areas of Learning

Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through 7 areas of learning:

Prime Areas

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Communication and Language Development

Physical Development

Specific Areas

Literacy

Mathematics

Understanding the World

Expressive Arts and Design

Early Years Aims

Intent

At Butts Primary we believe that all children deserve an education rich in memorable experiences that allows our children’s creativity and curiosity to grow, alongside the development of key skills and knowledge. We believe that offering our children a strong foundation and a love of learning gives children the best chance to become well-rounded, happy individuals, ready to succeed in an ever-changing world.

We recognise the importance of giving our children the best possible start to their education by planning and implementing teaching and learning opportunities that support them in reaching their full potential.

It is our intention to provide a stimulating learning environment where all children can work with adults and peers to develop confidence in their ability to learn. We aim to provide children with a well-structured, safe and active learning environment. This will enable our young learners to develop the skills, attitudes and understanding that support our children to become lifelong learners and encourage them to become active members of our ever-changing communities.

Implementation

We recognise that children will learn most effectively when they are happy, healthy, safe and secure, when their individual needs are met and when they have positive relationships with the adults who care for them. We aim to provide a setting that encompasses a safe and stimulating environment where children are able to enjoy learning and grow in confidence that helps them to achieve their potential.

In Early Years, we teach and learn alongside the children to build the foundation of their learning skills, knowledge and understanding of the curriculum.  We share the journey of learning through adult led and child lead intentions.

Throughout Nursery and Reception, our children are assessed in relation to their individual progress, using the documents “Development Matters”, Birth to Five” and the Early Learning Goals. These judgements are made on the basis of accumulative observations, interactions and in-depth knowledge of the children.

Impact

Our children will be actively engaged in their learning and the enjoyment of this learning will be apparent in their daily provision.  All children will have experienced a curriculum that provides exciting and enriching learning experiences and opportunities for them to learn through educational visits and practical experiences.

Our young learners will be able to appreciate and understand the world around them by experiencing and learning about community, different cultures, celebrations, music, dance, art and history. Children will actively ask questions about the world around them and their learning experiences. They will be able to take risks as this is an opportunity to learn.

Children will make sense of the world around them, through our school values. Our Early Years children will be successful learners and fully prepared for the next stage of their education as they transition from Early Years Foundation Stage into Key Stage One.

We know that by the end of Foundation Stage at Butts Primary School, our children will have developed the essential knowledge and skills required for everyday life and lifelong learning. We believe the children at Butts Primary School will be happy, inquisitive and successful learners.

Our Curriculum

Children in our Nursery and Reception Classes follow the Government standards for learning. We try to make learning experiences as fun and enjoyable as possible, through providing lots of play – based learning both indoors and out.

We also provide children with daily focused activities aimed to develop understanding and skills in reading (through ‘Read, Write Inc.’) writing and mathematics.

All our activities and learning experiences are aimed to develop outgoing, independent and confident learners, by developing the following 3 characteristics as described in the ‘Development Matters’ documentation:

  • Engagement; playing and exploring
  • Motivation; active learning
  • Thinking; Creating and Thinking Critically

Early Years Information

During your child’s sessions children will be given access to snack, milk or water. Snack costs £1.50 per week.

We also take advantage of the ‘National fruit in schools’ scheme and pupils enjoy a range of fruits which are delivered daily.

Children need to have access to water constantly during the day so we ask that you provide your child with a personal water bottle for them to use.
