Votes for Schools/Butts Question Time
At Butts Primary School, we believe that pupils should have ample opportunities to debate and vote on topics that matter most to them. From climate change to mental health, we cover a wide range of issues, ensuring that pupils are engaged, informed and able to express their views.
Through debates during assembly times, pupils develop the ability to speak clearly and confidently, project their voices, maintain their composure in front of an audience, and articulate their opinions effectively.
Pupils understand the importance of listening respectfully to different viewpoints, considering evidence, and making informed decisions. These experiences help them develop critical thinking skills, confidence, and an appreciation of democracy, preparing them to become active and responsible citizens in the future.
Following each debate, pupils are given the opportunity to vote and experience the democratic process firsthand. They learn to respect and accept the outcome, recognising that every voice matters and that decisions are made fairly through collective participation.
