Butts 4 Houses

We are delighted to share that we have successfully completed our Butts 4 Houses project, which has brought Walsall’s history to life for a new generation, blending creativity, education and community pride. Our project aimed to  promote Walsall’s history through learning about Walsall’s historical figures; Sidney Webster, Dorothy Pattison, (Sister Dora), John Carless and Jerome K. Jerome.   This learning was presented in numerous artistic presentations, such as banners, ballads and a school production and was funded by a National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Pupils and adults worked together to explore archived materials, including old photographs, maps, letters and newspaper articles.  By carefully searching through these records, they were able to access valuable resources that revealed stories of the past.  This research allowed them to build detailed profiles of four significant figures from Walsall's history, deepening their understanding of local heritage and strengthening connections to their community.

“I love history, and it was great to learn and share with the Walsall community how these 4 significant figures contributed to Walsall’s history.” Adib (pupil)

“I am glad that our class could research and then make the banners for each house because I think it was a creative idea and the end pieces came out well. I personally liked doing the drawings as it was nice to incorporate art into the project, especially because I am passionate about it. In my opinion, once we had done the research it was easy to think up of drawings for each figure and house. My work is now part of Walsall’s legacy." Wania (pupil)
