Year 6

Welcome to Year 6!

Hello Parents and Carers,

I hope that you are all safe and well and coping with home learning.

To help I have made a timetable of activities for you and your child to try each day. Please don’t worry if you cannot do everything.  The most important thing is not to get stressed and enjoy spending time talking and having fun with your child.

Thank you for all your support!

Stay safe

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire -Book of the week

Next term the bewitching hour will be upon us with Shakespeare's Macbeth.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

Year 6, are contemplating this over-arching question: -

Are we a product of our environment?

To assist them with their research, they read the novel, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.  The story is set during WWII and is seen through the innocent eyes of Bruno, the eight-year-old son of a German commandant,  whose secret friendship with a boy on the other side of the fence has startling and unexpected consequences.

During Topic and Science lessons, Year 6 are considering how plants and animals have adapted to their environment in the Arctic and Antarctica and whether this can provide further evidence to their over-arching question.

West-Side Story

A truly inspirational day which allowed Year 6 to witness the musical West-Side Story to enhance their understanding of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.   The struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice encouraged debate and understanding of working towards peace, love and a community spirit.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

We have started this academic year with a touch of magic and enchantment with Year 6 reading the spellbinding Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

Harry Potter thinks he is an ordinary boy - until he is rescued by a beetle-eyed giant of a man, enrols at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, learns to play Quidditch and does battle in a deadly duel.  The Reason: HARRY POTTER IS A WIZARD!

Will the boy who lives in a cupboard under the stairs, rise and defy his 'Muggle' family?  Will the reputation that precedes him, be a hindrance or an inspiration to his future life?

Upon completion of this term, the children were presented with their HWW certificate.

Harry Potter Day

Year 6 had a magically enchanting day preparing mouthwatering, luscious Butterbeer, vanilla cupcakes, and eye-dazzling, chocolate wands.  Monster and wizard corner bookmarks were a favourite as well Hogwarts House badges which the children designed and sewn together.

Recommended Read Challenge

We have a list of 100 books that we are sure that you will enjoy.  Try and read as many books as you can and rise to the challenge of reading 100 books by the end of the year.

SATs Parent Workshop

All year 6 parents were invited to attend a SATs Parent Workshop which emphasised the need to support children's learning at home as well as their mental well-being.

To aid relaxation, children can follow these 'Mindful 4-7-8' breathing steps:-

  1. Sit upright on the ground or in a chair.

  2. Take a deep breath in through your nose to the count of 4.

  3. Hold your breath to the count of 7.

  4. Exhale through your mouth to the count of 8.

  5. Continue to do this until you are feeling calmed and relaxed.
