Year 6

Welcome to Year 6!

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

Year 6, contemplated this over-arching question: -

Are we a product of our environment?

Year 6 came to the conclusion that being a product of our environment is quite a controversial area of discussion.  However, the general consensus was that we are a product of our environment and the children have supported their arguments with sound evidence logically and scientifically.

To assist them with their research, they read the novel, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.  The story is set during WWII and is seen through the innocent eyes of Bruno, the eight-year-old son of a German commandant,  whose secret friendship with a boy on the other side of the fence has startling and unexpected consequences.

Black Country Living Museum

A truly inspirational day which allowed Year 6 to explore the 26 acres of the open-air museum and witness first-hand life as a Victorian child especially being educated in the bleak and cold St. James' School.

Venturing underground and into the mines, the children experienced the daunting smell and sounds encountered by Victorian miners.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

We have started this academic year with a touch of magic and enchantment with Year 6 reading the spellbinding Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.   Upon completion of this term, the children were presented with their HWW certificate.

Harry Potter Day

Year 6 had a magically enchanting day preparing mouthwatering, luscious Butterbeer, vanilla cupcakes, and eye-dazzling, chocolate wands.  Monster and wizard corner bookmarks were a favourite as well Hogwarts House badges which the children designed and sewn together.

Recommended Read Challenge

We have a list of 100 books that we are sure that you will enjoy.  Try and read as many books as you can and rise to the challenge of reading 100 books by the end of the year.

SATs Parent Workshop

All year 6 parents were invited to attend a SATs Parent Workshop which emphasised the need to support children's learning at home as well as their mental well-being.

To aid relaxation, children can follow these 'Mindful 4-7-8' breathing steps:-

  1. Sit upright on the ground or in a chair.

  2. Take a deep breath in through your nose to the count of 4.

  3. Hold your breath to the count of 7.

  4. Exhale through your mouth to the count of 8.

  5. Continue to do this until you are feeling calmed and relaxed.
